Former Liverpool star hails ‘outstanding’ Arsenal
Mark Lawrenson heaps praise on Arsene Wenger's men
Mark Lawrenson has heaped praise on “outstanding” Arsenal after a 3-0 win against Olympiacos booked their place in the Champions League last 16.
Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock in the 29th minute with a close-range header before the France international added a second four minutes after half-time.
Giroud, who has scored 13 goals in games for club and country this season, completed his hat-trick in the 67th minute from the penalty spot to seal Arsenal’s place in the knockout-stage draw thanks to a convincing win.
And former Liverpool defender Lawrenson, who won the European Cup with the Reds in 1984, heaped praise on Arsene Wenger’s side after their emphatic victory in Greece.
“A lot of the Olympiakos fans in fairness have applauded the performance from Arsenal,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“It was a ‘Plan A’ performance. Get the goal, settle the nerves, go again and quite honestly they have won very comfortably.
“Beforehand it looked like an enormous achievement but they have all be outstanding. Yet another year in the Champions League final stages.”
The Gunners were 3-1 winners against Sunderland at Emirates Stadium in the Premier League at the weekend.
Arsenal make the trip to struggling Aston Villa at Villa Park in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
