Frank Lampard: Why I love this Arsenal star as a player so much
Frank Lampard is a keen admirer of Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey
Frank Lampard has revealed his admiration for Aaron Ramsey in the wake of the midfielder’s man-of-the-match performance in Arsenal’s win at Aston Villa on Sunday.
The Wales international slotted home Mesut Ozil’s square ball to put the Gunners 2-0 up at Villa Park after Olivier Giroud had given the visitors the lead from the penalty spot.
He’s very good on the ball, he’s very bright
Ramsey looks set for a regular run in central midfield for Arsenal in the coming weeks following injuries to the likes of Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin in the build-up to the hectic festive period.
Former Chelsea midfielder Lampard is a big fan of the 24-year-old and is backing Ramsey to add more discipline to his game in the absence of Coquelin, who is out with a knee injury.
Speaking on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports, Lampard said: “I love him as a player.
“I think he’s a very good player. He’s very good on the ball, he’s very bright. He doesn’t just [go forward], he actually does stuff in the middle of the park as well and I love to see that.”
Asked if he thinks Ramsey is ready to play in a more disciplined defensive midfield role, he replied: “At the moment, not quite.
“But I certainly think he has the capabilities. It’s more about him. He’ll have to listen to his manager. I remember when Arsenal came to Man City last year and shut up shop, they didn’t go bombing forward from midfield so much.
“On Monday [against Manchester City], he’s got to think: ‘I might not get into the box 10 times, I might get there two or three – but what I will do is protect my back four when I need to.”
Arsenal now have a week off to prepare for their crunch Premier League clash with Manchester City at Emirates Stadium on Monday 21 December.
