Garth Crooks: Why this Arsenal striker has to lead the attack
Garth Crooks heaps praise on Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud
Garth Crooks says Arsene Wenger has to stick with Olivier Giroud up front for Arsenal.
The France international continued his goal-scoring form on Sunday afternoon with the north London side’s opener in a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park.
There’s only one man to lead the line for Arsenal and that is Oliver Giroud
Giroud has scored five times in his last three games in all competitions after the 29-year-old bagged a hat-trick in Arsenal’s must-win game at Olympiacos last Tuesday.
The former Montpellier man has managed to cement a starting spot after initially falling behind England international Theo Walcott at the start of the season.
And retired Tottenham Hotspur striker Crooks explained why Giroud deserves to continue in a centre-forward role for the Premier League leaders.
Crooks told BBC Sport: “The way he brought down the ball from Nacho Monreal in the second half against Aston Villa gave you a sense of how confident Oliver Giroud has become these last few games.
“The Frenchman had already converted the penalty for Arsenal by this stage in the game and looked majestic throughout. Just why there was even a debate about who should play upfront for
“Arsenal when Theo Walcott was insisting he should play there, I really can’t comprehend.
There’s only one man to lead the line for Arsenal and that is Oliver Giroud.”
Giroud has scored 16 goals for club and country in 29 games in all competitions so far this season.
The French striker has netted eight times in his last nine games in all competitions for the FA Cup holders.
