Ian Wright: Why Arsenal have best chance to beat Barcelona
Ian Wright explains Arsenal won't be under any pressure to beat Barcelona in Champions League last-16 clash
Ian Wright believes Arsenal have their best opportunity to try and beat Barcelona in the Champions League last 16.
The Gunners were drawn against the Champions League holders on Monday morning after Arsene Wenger’s men booked their place in the knockout stage thanks to a 3-0 win at Olympiacos in the final group-stage game.
Arsene Wenger’s side have faced Spanish side Barcelona or Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich in the knockout stage in three of the past five Champions League seasons.
And the Gunners have fallen at the last-16 hurdle in the past five seasons, including a surprise 3-2 aggregate defeat by Ligue 1 side Monaco in the Champions League last term.
Former Arsenal striker Wright says no-one expects Arsenal to beat treble winners Barcelona, which means Wenger’s squad won’t be under any pressure in the last-16 clash.
Wright told BT Sport: “With the fittest team Arsenal can put out, Barcelona would be way of them. You can beat them but we’re talking of the best.
“They’ve nothing to lose as no-one expects them to get through after being knocked out at this stage five years on the spin.
“No-one expects them to beat Barcelona. It’s their best opportunity to try and beat them.”
Arsenal suffered a 2-1 defeat by La Liga side Barcelona in their only Champions League final appearance in Paris in 2006.
