Jamie Carragher reacts to Chelsea's sacking of Jose Mourinho on Thursday afternoon
Jamie Carragher says Jose Mourinho “tried everything” to turn around Chelsea’s stuttering form before his sacking on Thursday.
The Portuguese coach was dismissed by the west London club just seven months after guiding the Blues to the Premier League title.
Chelsea’s decline in recent weeks has been well-documented, with the Blues’ 2-1 loss to Leicester City on Monday night leaving them 16th in the Premier League table and just a point above the relegation zone.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes that Mourinho did a “fantastic” job during his second spell back in charge at Stamford Bridge but was made to pay for the Blues’ inconsistent form.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ, Carragher said: “I think he did a fantastic job and maybe didn’t get the recognition he deserved really, because Chelsea had been out of the running for the title for a few years before he came back.
“I think he’s probably tried everything as a manager to try and change the results and it hasn’t worked.
“It’s probably been the most difficult time of his career and he’s probably left thinking: ‘what do I do next?’ because he’s never ever been in a situation where he’s struggled for results and people have questioned him – but that’s how it’s got to.”
It is not yet clear who will take charge of Chelsea for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Sunderland at Stamford Bridge.
Despite their struggles in the Premier League, Mourinho guided the Blues to the last 16 of the Champions League, where they will face Paris Saint-Germain.
