Jamie Carragher: Why I really want Arsenal to win the title
Jamie Carragher wants to see Arsenal end their long wait for the Premier League title this season
Jamie Carragher admits that he would love to see Arsene Wenger guide Arsenal to the Premier League title this season.
The north London club are being tipped by many to have their best chance of winning the top-flight crown this season following their impressive victory over title rivals Manchester City last week.
Arsenal, who have lifted the FA Cup in the last two seasons running, have not won the title since their famous unbeaten triumph back in the 2003-04 campaign.
And former Liverpool defender Carragher admits that he would be delighted to see Wenger guide the Gunners to another title this term.
“Seeing Leicester top on Christmas Day was fantastic,” Carragher wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.
“Their story in 2015 could not have been scripted and I genuinely hope it continues for as long as possible. But if I could pick a team to be champions, I would not hesitate in selecting Arsenal.
“The main reason is for Arsene Wenger. He changed football when he arrived in England but for the last five or six years he’s had to endure a lot of stick from the media, pundits (guilty!), Jose Mourinho and even his own fans. But Wenger very rarely reacts, and he tries to take it all in his stride.
“His team are moving in the right direction and, after two FA Cups, I would like to see him lift the Premier League trophy again. It would be an achievement to crown his outstanding career.”
Arsenal booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League against the odds as they beat Olympiacos 3-0 in Athens earlier this month to qualify for the knockout phase of Europe’s elite club competition, where they will take on holders Barcelona.
