Jan Molby: Jurgen Klopp needs creative midfielder for Liverpool
Jan Molby believes Jurgen Klopp needs a signing who can transform Liverpool's midfield
Jan Molby believes Jurgen Klopp needs to sign a creative midfielder for Liverpool in the January transfer window.
Versatile Emre Can has been used in a variety of different roles under Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers and the former Borussia Dortmund manager since the midfielder moved to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014.
The new Liverpool boss has utilised his compatriot in a centre-midfield since taking over the reins at the Merseyside outfit from the Northern Irishman, scoring in a 1-1 draw with Sion in the Europa League earlier this term.
The Reds have been linked with a host of creative midfielders ahead of the opening of the January transfer window, and Molby believes Klopp needs to sign a player capable of picking a pass and creating chances who will compliment Can.
Molby told Liverpool Echo: “People are talking about what we need to do in January.
“A lot of attention has focused on the centre back situation and things like that.
“But for me the most vital requirement is somebody creative in midfield, who can pick the right pass and get the team moving forwards.
“At the moment we have Emre Can who is showing a lot of good things but is still relatively inexperienced.
“Alongside that you’ve got Lucas and he’s always been a very careful passer – what we need is bang the opposite of that, somebody who will gamble on a ball and perhaps open a team up.
“Believe me, the difference this type of player could have on the whole team is massive.
“It’s going to be a very busy festive period considering the number of games we have early in January.”
Can has scored one goal in 21 games in all competitions for the 18-time English champions.
