John Aldridge: Something is wrong with this promising Liverpool star

John Aldridge has not been impressed by what he has seen from Roberto Firmino for Liverpool of late

John Aldridge has criticised Roberto Firmino for his recent displays for Liverpool, claiming that “something is wrong” with the Brazilian.

Firmino has been a regular fixture in the Liverpool side in recent weeks and has made 12 Premier League appearances for the Reds so far this term.

The 24-year-old Brazilian played 62 minutes against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon and was unable to prevent Jurgen Klopp’s men from slipping to a 2-0 loss to the Magpies.

And former Liverpool star Aldridge has questioned Firmino’s recent form for the Reds after had impressed earlier in the season.

Aldridge wrote in his column for the Liverpool Echo: “Roberto Firmino is playing as if something is wrong, mentally and physically. He’s been absolutely redundant the last two games.

“It can’t just be the fact his mate Coutinho has been missing. The Brazilian also pulled out of a challenge that was 55-45 in his favour.

“Liverpool fans won’t accept that. I’ve been going for 50 years and I know it’s unacceptable. If the ball is there to be won you win it. He’s going to have to learn to get stuck in.

Saturday’s loss to Newcastle at St James’ Park left Liverpool eighth place in the Premier League table and nine points behind leaders Leicester City after 15 games.

The Reds’ next top flight game is a home clash against West Brom at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
