Johnny Giles: Why Arsenal star reminds me of Steven Gerrard
Johnny Giles says Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey is like Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard
Aaron Ramsey is in the same mould as Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, according to Johnny Giles.
The Arsenal midfielder impressed for the north London side in their 3-0 victory over Olympiacos in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Ramsey has recently returned from injury to slightly ease Arsene Wenger’s fitness crisis at The Emirates, making his comeback in the 3-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb last month.
And former United midfielder Giles discussed Ramsey’s best position in the Arsenal side, explaining why the Wales international wouldn’t work as a creative midfielder.
“Ramsey is a goal-scorer. I don’t think he is a particularly good, brainy footballer,” Giles told Newstalk’s Off The Ball.
“At his best, he is a good goal-scoring midfielder. He isn’t a creative player.”
Giles added: “He is a bit like Lampard or Gerrard. He isn’t a player who will control the game for him.
“He is a good-hearted player.”
Ramsey has scored two goals and has made one assist in 16 appearances in all competitions so far this season.
Arsenal are in second place in the Premier League table and a point behind surprise leaders Leicester City after a 3-1 win against Sunderland last weekend.
Ramsey will be hoping to score in successive weeks against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon after he netted against the Black Cats last Saturday.
