The 20-time English champions need to beat the Bundesliga side to be certain of a place in the knockout stage of Europe’s premier club competition.

The Premier League’s third-placed side will travel to Bournemouth and Stoke City in the weeks following their Germany trip before they complete December with a home clash against Chelsea.

The Spain international isn’t underestimating the challenge that West Ham will pose this weekend after of a big month for Van Gaal’s squad.

“The game in Germany will be one of the six ‘finals’ we are facing in a busy December,” Mata wrote in his blog.

“We’re starting to see a Christmas atmosphere in the streets of Manchester and, in this country, that is a synonym of football and more football. The next game – therefore the most important one right now – is on Saturday against West Ham.

“They have had a good start this season and have won more games away than at home. However, as I said, we don’t like draws and we want to go back to the victories.

“They have a very good manager and some of their players are very talented, but our aim is to get the three points and we have the whole week to work well on this game.”

United played out a 1-1 draw with Leicester on Saturday evening after Bastian Schweinsteiger cancelled out Jamie Vardy’s opener at King Power Stadium.
