Jurgen Klopp: Why this Liverpool star sometimes plays like he’s 18
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp discusses Germany star Emre Can
Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool midfielder Emre Can sometimes can play like an 18-year-old.
The Germany international has been one of Liverpool’s most-impressive players in recent months following Klopp’s appointment at Anfield.
He’s 21; very often he doesn’t look like 21 in his game, sometimes he looks like 18. That’s the truth and he knows it
Can impressed in Wednesday night’s 6-1 win at Southampton in the League Cup quarter-final after his defence-splitting pass found Daniel Sturridge to put the Reds ahead at St Mary’s.
However, Klopp will be without Can for Liverpool’s trip to Newcastle on Sunday afternoon after he picked up a booking in the Capital One Cup clash.
Speaking at his pre-match media conference on Friday afternoon, Klopp explained why Liverpool will miss their “big talent” in midfield against the Magpies.
“Emre is like the whole team, he’s in a good way. The big difference between him and some other players is he’s very young,” Klopp said.
“He’s 21; very often he doesn’t look like 21 in his game, sometimes he looks like 18. That’s the truth and he knows it.
“We are very often in talks about this. He has a problem – he speaks the same language as me! That means I can talk more with him.
“Emre is a really good player and I like working together with him. But he’s not available for the next game. Of course, it should not be the biggest problem for us, we have other quality players that didn’t play on Wednesday. They are recovered. We will have a good formation.
“Emre, like every young player with obviously big talent, has to learn.”
The 21-year-old midfielder has scored one goal in 21 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool this season.
Can moved to the Reds from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in 2014, completing a £9.75m transfer to the Merseyside outfit.
Liverpool are six points behind leaders Manchester City.
