Klopp delivers latest Liverpool injury update after Sion clash
Jurgen Klopp delivers latest Liverpool injury update following 0-0 draw on frozen Sion pitch
Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Liverpool emerged unscathed from their goalless draw with Sion on Thursday night as the Reds manager criticised the Swiss side’s frozen pitch.
The away side struggled to create any clear-cut chances in Switzerland in their final group-stage game, although Divock Origi had a late chance but couldn’t guide his finish goalwards from close range.
Nobody is injured and they were very focused and concentrated on the game, so everything is OK
Simon Mignolet also made a save to deny Sion’s Ebenezer Assifuah in a game of few chances, as Liverpool maintained their unbeaten record in this season’s competition and finishing top of Group B.
And Klopp, who was appointed as Brendan Rodgers’s successor at Anfield in October, was pleased that Liverpool didn’t suffer any injury scares on an unsuitable frozen pitch in Switzerland.
“It was difficult because the ground was very difficult to play on for both teams,” Klopp told his post-match media conference.
“The first thing to do tonight was to show character and show that you’re prepared for a game like this. That’s what my team did, so I’m really satisfied. Nobody is injured and they were very focused and concentrated on the game, so everything is OK.
“It was not the football we all know, our best football, but we also know that although it’s an outdoor sport, frozen ground is for other sports usually.”
Philippe Coutinho made his first appearance since his outstanding performance in a 4-1 victory over Manchester City last month as the Brazil international was a second-half substitute in the Europa League last night.
Liverpool face West Bromwich Albion at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
