Klopp delivers latest Liverpool injury update ahead of Newcastle trip
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp gives the latest update on Philippe Coutinho's fitness
Jurgen Klopp says he is cautiously optimistic that Philippe Coutinho will be ready for Liverpool’s trip to Newcastle United on Sunday.
The Brazil international missed Liverpool’s victories over Bordeaux, Swansea City and Southampton due to a hamstring injury.
He has been training, we will wait and I can wait every day – it’s no problem until somebody tells me he is available
Coutinho suffered the injury during Liverpool’s impressive 4-1 win at Manchester City last month after he had scored and made one assist at The Etihad.
However, Liverpool manager Klopp was coy on whether the 23-year-old playmaker would feature against the Magpies at St James’s Park on Sunday afternoon.
“I like optimism, but with Phil we were too optimistic. Sometimes it happens like this and there’s nothing to criticise about it,” Klopp said as the manager gave his latest Liverpool injury update at his pre-match media conference.
“He tried everything he could, he trained near normally but he doesn’t feel comfortable, so we have to take care of this.
“The muscle is a dangerous thing and always when you feel something or don’t feel comfortable then stop.
“He has been training, we will wait and I can wait every day – it’s no problem until somebody tells me he is available and then next time he’ll play. Yesterday nobody gave me this sign, so we will have to wait [and see] today.”
Coutinho was named Liverpool’s player of the season last year after a standout campaign for the Merseyside outfit.
The former Inter Milan star has netted four goals in his last three Premier League outings.
The South American joined Liverpool in an £8.5m deal from Inter in January 2013.
The Merseyside outfit are six points behind joint Premier League leaders Manchester City and Leicester City ahead of their trip to Steve McClaren’s Newcastle.
