Klopp delivers latest Liverpool injury update ahead of Southampton tie
Jurgen Klopp says he will assess Philippe Coutinho in Liverpool training ahead of League Cup tie
Jurgen Klopp says Philippe Coutinho will be assessed in training on Tuesday before the Liverpool manager makes a decision on the Brazilian’s fitness ahead of tomorrow’s League Cup clash at Southampton.
The Brazil international missed the Reds’s 1-0 win against Swansea City at Anfield on Sunday after the 23-year-old suffered a hamstring problem during Liverpool’s 4-1 win at Manchester City last month.
Coutinho trained with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and his Reds team-mates on Monday morning in what appeared to be a fitness boost for Klopp ahead of Wednesday night’s League Cup quarter-final.
However, the German head coach, who was appointed as Liverpool manager in October after the Merseyside derby, was coy when asked about Coutinho’s prospects of facing Ronaldo Koeman’s side at St Mary’s.
“I can’t make decision in this moment because we have training later today,” Klopp told his pre-match media conference.
“At the end, I will talk about everything with the medical department and Philippe.
“Coutinho could be close, but we need to check and double-check the situation [before Southampton].”
