Wenger delivers latest Arsenal injury update after Man City win
Arsene Wenger delivers the latest Arsenal team news on Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil
Arsene Wenger has revealed that he expects Alexis Sanchez to miss the Christmas period due to injury and is predicting that the Chile international will not return for Arsenal until January.
The forward had been expected to be named on the bench for Monday night’s 2-1 Premier League win over Manchester City but Wenger revealed after the game that he had suffered a minor setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.
Asked when he expects Sanchez to be back available, Wenger told his post-match news conference: “I think he will be back January 10. Christmas period – you can’t count him.
“He had a slight [setback] but he planned to be on the bench tonight – he is so keen he got a little bit of a pain and we didn’t take a gamble.”
The Chile international has been out of action since suffering a hamstring injury during the 1-1 draw with Norwich City at Carrow Road at the end of November.
Wenger also went on to reveal that Mesut Ozil had been struggling with a chest infection in recent days and that was why he opted to substitute him in the 75th minute against City.
Asked about Ozil, Wenger continued: “He had a chest infection for the week and was in bed. he had only one training session yesterday and for a guy who could not prepare well he has done very well physically.
“I’m a bit cautious because we have lost three or four players recently so I have to be cautious a little bit.”
Arsenal travel to Southampton on Boxing Day.
