Three forwards Liverpool could sign in the January transfer window
Iqbal Johal takes a look at three possible recruits for Liverpool in the forthcoming January transfer window
The 22-year-old Argentina international has recently been linked with Liverpool and would be an excellent option up front, especially after the latest injury setback to Daniel Sturridge. Icardi scored 22 Serie A goals for Inter Milan last season – the joint highest in the league – and is a quick, intelligent, strong striker who is a natural goal-scorer that Liverpool need after never being able to replace Luis Suarez. With Sturridge and Danny Ings injured, that leaves just Christian Benteke and Divock Origi as Liverpool’s only recognised strikers. With a top-four finish up for grabs this season, a player of this calibre is needed to allow Klopp to achieve this target.
Another striker that fits the bill is Dortmund’s Gabon international who is well-known to Klopp. Aubameyang has been in prolific form this season, scoring 17 Bundesliga goals in just 14 appearances and has 25 goals in all competitions. Altogether, he has netted 66 times in 117 outings for the German giants and is one of Europe’s hottest goal-scoring properties. A versatile attacker who can play anywhere in a front three or just behind, he is regarded as one of the fastest players in the game who is extremely quick on the ball as well. These types of attributes makes him an exciting prospect for English clubs and Liverpool need to be quick to snap him up. A player who would certainly be the missing piece of the puzzle, the only stumbling block is with the price, as Dormund want £42m for him. Despite this, if Liverpool want to fulfil Champions League and future title ambitions, then Aubameyang could well be the man to lead them.
Closer to home, Liverpool have been linked with Premier League record breaker Jamie Vardy. The 28-year-old beat Ruud Van Nistlerooy’s Premier League record for scoring in consecutive matches, against Manchester United two weeks ago. With 14 goals already to his name, there is no better in-form striker in the league than Vardy, who could be the player Liverpool are looking for. After first bursting onto the scene last season during Leicester’s 5-3 victory over United, Vardy has gone on to win four England caps and many admirers across Europe. Prolific at Non-League level, Vardy has carried on that form since signing for Leicester in 2012, scoring 39 in 112 League appearances to help the Foxes enjoy a remarkable start to the season. The Leicester star is blessed with lightning pace, high work-rate and an ever improving eye for goal – and would be surely be a fantastic option in January for Liverpool as they push for Champions League football.
