Liverpool legend: Why Joel Campbell will be better Arsenal player now
Mark Lawrenson heaps praise on Arsenal striker Joel Campbell
Mark Lawrenson says Joel Campbell will blossom into a better player thanks to his performance in Arsenal’s 3-0 win against Olympiacos.
The Costa Rica international produced his best performance in an Arsenal shirt in Greece as he teed up Olivier Giroud for the France international’s second goal.
I do believe after Wednesday night he should go on to become a better player because of the experience
Campbell also completed two successful dribbles, had 49 touches in a dominant performance on the left wing, as well as making three winning tackles during the Champions League win.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes Campbell’s performance against Olympiacos could prove the turning point in the Costa Rican forward’s Arsenal career.
Lawrenson told BBC Sport: “When people talk about why do managers let players go like Campbell has been let go a few times it’s because at a football club, managers see these players day in day out and they see what we don’t.
“They’ve probably stopped looking at him as a weak link now. You see a young player coming into a team and you are not too sure, you think ‘should I give him the ball or not?’
“I do believe after Wednesday night he should go on to become a better player because of the experience.”
Campbell moved to Premier League side Arsenal from Saprissa in 2011 but the South American forward had to wait until early this season to make his first Gunners appearance.
The Costa Rican rose to prominence after his impressive performances in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as he helped his national team reach the knockout stage.
