Liverpool transfers: John Barnes wants January signings
John Barnes says Liverpool need to improve their squad in the January transfer window
John Barnes says Liverpool need to improve their squad in January after Sunday afternoon’s humiliating 3-0 loss to Watford.
The Reds suffered a resounding defeat by the promoted side as on-loan Chelsea defender Nathan Ake broke the deadlock before Odion Ighalo scored his 12th and 13th Premier League goals of the season.
To be where we want to be we need better players
Liverpool are in ninth place and five points adrift of Tottenham Hotspur who occupy the final Champions League spot after their 2-0 win at Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
Klopp has only won three of his opening nine Premier League games in charge of the 18-time English champions after he took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers in October.
Former Liverpool captain Barnes is under no illusion that the Reds desperately need better players in their squad if Klopp is going to transform the club’s fortunes.
“For Liverpool to win they have to play good football, they have to play the way they played against Manchester City,” Barnes told Sky Sports.
“If they are not able to do that are they strong enough? Are they physical? Can they out-muscle teams? Can they match teams and they can’t.
“I love Jurgen Klopp, he’s a great manager. But at the start when he came I said to not get carried away, thinking all of a sudden things are going to happen.
“He has good players, don’t get me wrong but to be where we want to be we need better players.”
Liverpool host Premier League leaders Leicester City in their next game at King Power Stadium.
