The Dutchman has found himself under intense pressure in the wake of his side’s 2-0 loss to Stoke City in the Premier League on Boxing Day.
That result was United’s third straight loss in the league and followed their Champions League elimination earlier this month.
Van Gaal and his United players do not have long to dust themselves down as they prepare for a crunch clash against Guus Hiddink’s Chelsea side at Old Trafford on Monday afternoon.
And Van Gaal is hoping to see a response from his players when they host the Blues on 28 December looking to return to winning ways.
Van Gaal told Sky Sports after Saturday’s defeat by the Potters: “You can say we can quickly get revenge for this defeat against Chelsea but in the time in between, you have to recover because the players have given everything and then you have to manage that you are very confident to start the game, and that you dare to play our football – our football!
“It is very difficult to do that in just two days but we shall try.”
Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has been touted as a potential successor for Van Gaal at United should the Dutchman leave the club.
