Manchester United starlet Anthony Martial is all smiles after winning the 2015 Golden Boy award
Manchester United striker Anthony Martial was all smiles as he posed for a picture after winning the 2015 Golden Boy award for Europe’s best young player.
The 20-year-old France international, who joined United from Monaco in the summer, won the prize ahead of Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman and Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin. His United team-mates Luke Shaw and Adnan Januzaj were also on the shortlist.
Martial’s impressive year has included a successful end to the season with Monaco as they finished third in Ligue 1, a first senior cap for France in September and six goals in his first 19 appearances for United.
A statement from the Red Devils read: “Everyone at Manchester United would like to congratulate Anthony on this great achievement.”
Established by Italian publication Tuttosport in 2003, the Golden Boy award is for players under the age of 21 and is voted for by journalists from 30 major newspapers across the continent.
Martial becomes the third United player to receive the price, after Wayne Rooney (2004) and Anderson (2008) – no other club has had more than one winner.
Raheem Sterling won the prize last year. Other previous winners include Lionel Messi, Cesc Fabregas, Sergio Aguero and Paul Pogba.
