Mark Lawrenson: What Chelsea boss told me about Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil
Mark Lawrenson reveals that both he and Jose Mourinho are keen admirers of Arsenal's Mesut Ozil
Mark Lawrenson has claimed that Mesut Ozil is not getting the praise that he deserves at Arsenal and has revealed Jose Mourinho’s admiration for the playmaker.
The 27-year-old notched up his 13th Premier League assist of the season on Sunday afternoon as he set up Aaron Ramsey for Arsenal’s second goal in their 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park.
Ozil has earned plenty of new admirers in recent weeks as his impressive form helped Arsenal move top of the Premier League on Sunday.
However, the Germany international has also faced his fair share of criticism since joining Arsenal in a big-money deal from Real Madrid back in the summer of 2013.
Chelsea boss Mourinho coached Ozil during his spell in charge at the Bernabeu, and Lawrenson has lifted the lid on a conversation he had with the Portuguese coach about the Arsenal playmaker.
Lawrenson told BBC Sport: “One thing in their [Arsenal’s] favour is that this season Mesut Ozil has been fantastic. He really hasn’t got the column inches he deserves.
“Jose Mourinho once said to me, when sometimes he would turn his back in training with Real Madrid he could always tell when Ozil struck the ball. It made a different sound.”
Arsenal take on Manchester City in the Premier League on Monday 21 December.
