Mesut Ozil needs to improve Arsenal goal record, says ex-defender
Kenny Cunningham wants Arsenal star Mesut Ozil to improve one part of his game
Mesut Ozil needs to improve his goal record for Arsenal, according to Kenny Cunningham.
The Gunners playmaker made his 14th and 15th assists in 16 Premier League games on Monday night as Ozil inspired Arsenal to a 2-1 victory over Manchester City at The Emirates.
He has to do better in terms of his goal tally
However, the World Cup winner has only scored two goals in the Premier League so far this season, and the 27-year-old has failed to score in six Champions League appearances.
Former Republic of Ireland and Birmingham City defender Cunningham insists Ozil needs to improve his goal record despite an impressive season so far.
“For a player of his talent, you’d probably be greedy and ask for a few more goals,” Cunningham told Newstalk’s Off The Ball.
“Obviously in terms of assists, he blows you out of the water. He has to do better in terms of his goal tally.
“He gets himself in great positions and I know people say he is unselfish looking to play team-mates in, but a lot of the time the best option is to hit the target himself.”
Ozil moved to Arsenal from La Liga side Real Madrid in a club-record £42.5m deal in August 2013.
The Germany midfielder has won back-to-back FA Cups since his move to Arsenal, but Ozil hasn’t won the Premier League title.
Arsenal are in second place in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Leicester City.
