Neil Mellor says a top-four place is looking out of Liverpool’s reach this season.

The Reds are winless in three Premier League games following back-to-back losses to Newcastle United and Watford on the road and a 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion at Anfield.

A top-four place is starting to look pretty difficult now, though it can still be done

Liverpool have struggled to maintain their impressive start to life under new manager Jurgen Klopp and the 18-time English champions have won just three of their nine Premier League games.

Former Reds striker Mellor, who was part of Liverpool’s European Cup-winning squad in 2005, reckons Liverpool have an outshide shout of securing a place in next season’s Champions League.

“He is pulling the players and the supporters – the whole club – together,” Mellor told Liverpool Echo.

“And in signalling to the lads that he is not looking to bring in new faces in the January transfer window, he is sending out a message that he believes in them all.

“A top-four place is starting to look pretty difficult now, though it can still be done.

“But we’ve a cup semi-final soon and if we can win it, get to Wembley and do well too in the knockout stages of the Europa League, the curve for 2016 will be firmly upwards.”

The Reds opted to appoint former Borussia Dortmund manager Klopp as Brendan Rodgers’s successor in October following their goalless draw with Everton at Goodison Park.
