Newcastle 2 Liverpool 0: Player ratings as Christian Benteke struggles

Player rating as Liverpool lose 2-0 to Newcastle United at St James' Park in the Premier League

Newcastle United

Robbie Elliot The Newcastle No2 was almost caught out by a corner in the first half. He wasn’t called into action from open play as Benteke and Sturridge misfired. 7/10

Daryl Janmaat He was strong in the challenge against Ibe when the Liverpool forward switched to the left-hand side. He was aggressive at right-back. 7

Chancel Mbemba Mangulu He powered a header over two minutes before half-time. Mbemba read the game well and made a number of important interceptions. 8

Fabricio Coloccini The Newcastle captain showed a good reading of the game with one of his better performance on his 200th Premier League appearance. A two-footed challenge on Ibe surprisingly went unpunished. 7

Paul Dummett The Newcastle left-back was given a thorough examination by speedster Ibe. While he didn’t win too many of the sprints between the pair, his reading of the game helped to limit Ibe’s impact. 7

Vurnon Anita The Newcastle midfielder battled well. He was booked for a late tackle on Allen, though. 7

Jack Colback The former Sunderland man was booked for a late tackle on Firmino. He worked hard closing down Liverpool’s midfielders. 6

Moussa Sissoko A slow start from the France international with a couple of loose passes. 6

Georginio Wijnaldum (Man of the match) A good pass to set Cisse free but the striker couldn’t finish. He couldn’t guide Anita’s across on target from an acute angle. He was Newcastle’s most-creative player and fittingly, he made the breakthrough with a deflected finish. It got even better for the Dutch star as he bagged a second on the break. 9

Siem De Jong The former Ajax man made his second Premier League start in 18 months. The forward looked like a player who hasn’t played much competitive football. Still, his effort can’t be faulted. 5

Papiss Cisse He fired a low shot across Mignolet’s goal but the offside spared his blushes when he should have hit the target. He couldn’t find a route to goal with only Skrtel to beat. 6

Liverpool

Simon Mignolet He could do little about Wijnaldum’s first which was deflected into the net by Skrtel. Perhaps a tad rash in his attempt to close down the Newcastle midfielder for his added-time goal. 5

Nathaniel Clyne A lung-bursting run came to nothing as the full-back failed to find a team-mate with a pass. It was a solid performance from the England defender. 7

Martin Skrtel He made a last-ditch tackle with Cisse closing in on Mignolet’s goal. It wasn’t pretty but was effective. The centre-half deflected Wijnaldum’s shot past Mignolet. 5

Dejan Lovren The Croatia defender looks to be gaining in confidence under Jurgen Klopp. It was an assured performance but couldn’t close down Wijnaldum. 6

Alberto Moreno A brisk start from one of Liverpool’s in-form players. He got forward well but also carried out his defensive duties. He was denied a special equaliser by an incorrect offside flag. 6

Lucas Leiva The defensive midfielder kept his passing simple. The Brazil international was booked for a cynical foul on De Jong with Newcastle breaking. 6

Joe Allen The Wales international made his first Premier League start of the season. He was busy as he covered plenty of ground as part of Klopp’s press. He miscued a second-half attempt. 6

James Milner The Liverpool captain wasn’t afraid to get stuck in against his former club. The England international’s endeavour can’t be faulted, but he lacked the quality to carve open the Newcastle defence. 6

Jordon Ibe It was a lively start from the England Under-21 winger. Ibe looked like Liverpool’s most-likely player to create a chance in the absence of Philippe Coutinho but his final ball disappointed. 7

Roberto Firmino The Brazilian playmaker was restored to the starting line-up. He was neat and tidy in possession without being threatening. A disappointing performance. 5

Christian Benteke He wasted the first opportunity of St James’s Park as he nudged a close-range effort over the crossbar. It simply wasn’t the striker’s day as he struggled to threaten a struggling Newcastle defender. 5

Daniel Sturridge He missed a super opportunity to level the game in the 74th minute. N/A
