Newcastle legend calls for spirit of Kevin Keegan ahead of Liverpool win

Faustino Asprilla's wish came true as Newcastle United beat Liverpool

I will love it if we beat them. Love it.

These were the words of Kevin Keegan during the former Newcastle United manager’s famous rant after he fell afoul of Sir Alex Ferguson’s famous mind games.

Keegan’s rant has become the stuff of football legend over the past 18 years or so, with the interview regularly regurgitated on Premier League Years on Sky Sports.

However, Faustino Asprilla recalled one of the Premier League’s most-iconic moments on Sunday afternoon, and the Toon legend used Keegan’s words to inspire Steve McClaren’s struggling side against Liverpool at St James’ Park.

And remarkably, the Magpies battled to a 2-0 victory over Jurgen Klopp’s all-conquering Liverpool side thanks to Martin Skrtel’s own goal and Georginio Wijnaldum’s added-time strike.

Unsurprisingly, Asprilla, who scored in Newcastle’s famous 4-3 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield in 1996 under Keegan, was pretty happy with the result on social media.

Newcastle remain in the bottom three despite their win, whilst Liverpool sit in sixth place.
