Paul Merson delivers blunt take on Arsenal’s Champions League hopes
Paul Merson says Arsenal have no chance of winning the Champions League this season
Paul Merson has claimed that Arsenal have no chance of winning the Champions League this season, despite their impressive 3-0 win over Olympiacos on Wednesday night.
The Gunners booked their place in the last 16 of Europe’s elite club competition with a thrilling victory in Athens as Olivier Giroud netted a superb hat-trick to send the north London side through as runners-up in their group behind Bayern Munich.
The problem for Arsenal is they need more consistency
Arsenal will face one of these teams in the first knockout round of Europe’s elite club competition in the new year, with the last-16 draw set to be made on Monday morning.
But despite being impressed by Arsenal’s victory against the Greek outfit, former Gunner Merson doesn’t expect Arsene Wenger’s men to be able to win the competition.
Merson wrote in his column for the Daily Star: “Fair play to them for a massive result against Olympiacos but it didn’t shock me at all. I did see them winning that game.
“It’s great they are through. But they are not winning the Champions League, let’s be honest. They are a long way from teams like Bayern Munich.
“The problem for Arsenal is they need more consistency, they have not been good enough against the lesser teams lately.
“Arsenal return to Premier League action with a trip to Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon. The Gunners are currently second in the table.”
