Paul Merson has urged Arsene Wenger to sign Victor Wanyama to bolster Arsenal’s midfielder for the second half of the season.

The Gunners are currently short on midfield options following injuries to Mikel Areta, Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin.

England international Jack Wilshere has also been sidelined since the start of the season after he picked up an injury their final training session ahead of the Community Shield.

Kenya international Victor Wanyama has been linked with a move to Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur after an impressive run of form in recent months for the south coast club.

And former Arsenal playmaker Merson reckons Wanyama could be a great addition to the Gunners squad ahead of their Premier League title push.

“They need a centre-half and a holding midfield player,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“They have enough money to get Wanyama. He is big and strong and he ripped Arsenal apart the other day; he was head and shoulders above their midfield.”

Wanyama has made 17 Premier League appearances for the Saints so far this season.
