Paul Merson predicts outcome of Stoke City v Man United
Paul Merson believes Manchester United continue one of their worst Premier League runs in recent seasons
Paul Merson is tipping Stoke City to heap more misery on Louis van Gaal and Manchester United at Britannia Stadium on Boxing Day.
The Red Devils head to the Potters on Saturday as Van Gaal’s side look to secure their first victory in seven games in all competitions.
The best United can hope for is 1-1, and that could be a struggle
The Dutchman stormed out of his pre-match media conference on Wednesday evening as the cracks appear to get bigger at the 20-time English champions.
The Red Devils have lost back-to-back Premier League games against promoted sides Bournemouth and Norwich City over the past two weeks.
And former Arsenal playmaker Merson can’t see the United players putting a halt to their worst Premier League run in recent seasons.
“It’s a must-win game for Louis van Gaal, but I don’t see them doing it. Stoke are a decent team, and they don’t let in a lot of goals at the Britannia Stadium,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“I can’t remember a United run of form this bad in recent memory and it’s not just that, it’s who they’re losing to. You can understand if you’re losing against Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City. But, and no disrespect to either team, they are losing to Bournemouth and Norwich now.
“The best United can hope for is 1-1, and that could be a struggle. I don’t like going against Stoke at home, they tend to keep a lot of clean sheets, and I’m going with a win for the Potters again.”
Stoke were memorable 2-0 winners against United’s bitter rivals Manchester City at The Britannia in their penultimate Premier League home fixture.
The Red Devils are in fifth place and nine points behind surprise Premier League leaders Leicester City ahead of Saturday afternoon’s clash.
