Paul Merson states his prediction for Aston Villa v Arsenal
Paul Merson reckons Arsenal will have too much for Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon
Paul Merson is confidently tipping Arsenal to beat Aston Villa 3-0 in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon and continue their good form.
The Gunners head into Sunday’s game on the back of their thrilling 3-0 victory at Olympiacos on Wednesday night as Olivier Giroud’s hat-trick helped Arsene Wenger’s men book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
A win for Arsenal at Villa Park would move the north London side top of the Premier League table ahead of Leicester City’s clash with Chelsea on Monday night.
And former Gunners star Merson feels that Arsenal will have too much for the Villains to cope with on Sunday afternoon.
Merson told Sky Sports: “Villa are slightly better under Remi Garde, but you can tell they have no confidence.
“I know Liverpool were supposed to turn up against Newcastle and turn them over, the same as people expect Arsenal to do on Sunday.
“But Newcastle have a bit more about them; I look at Villa’s team and think: ‘Who’s going to hurt Arsenal?’ I can’t see anything but a comfortable win for Arsenal. You try and make a case for Villa, but I struggle.
“Arsenal will be bouncing after a big escape in the Champions League group stages. They wasted points last month, and the next few games after Villa – Man City (h), Southampton (a) and Bournemouth (h) – are huge for them. That busy Christmas period always is.”
Arsenal were 3-1 winners against Sunderland at Emirates Stadium in their most recent top-flight outing last weekend.
The Gunners, who finished third last season, are currently second in the table and two points behind surprise leaders Leicester City after 15 games.
