The Blues head into the Boxing Day clash looking to build on last weekend’s 3-1 win over Sunderland in west London, which was their first game since Jose Mourinho’s sacking earlier this month.
Hiddink has been tasked with guiding Chelsea out of trouble after Mourinho was dismissed following a dismal return of nine defeats in their opening 16 Premier League games.
Chelsea are the favourites to claim victory over the Hornets at Stamford Bridge, and former Arsenal star Merson is backing the home side to secure a comfortable victory.
Merson told Sky Sports: “Watford absolutely took Liverpool apart last week, and they are going along brilliantly. Chelsea played quite well against Sunderland, but it was a couple of days too late for Jose Mourinho.
“I’ve been so impressed with the Hornets. Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney have been great, but I think this might be a game too far for them. John Terry and Kurt Zouma or Terry and Gary Cahill, whatever the combination, it is a lot different to anything Liverpool could put out at the back.
“I expect Chelsea to win at home, and I’d be shocked if they didn’t despite Watford’s good form.”
Chelsea won the Premier League and League Cup under Mourinho last season but their disastrous start to the new campaign left their title defence in tatters.
Hiddink has been placed in temporary charge until the end of the season at Stamford Bridge.
