Paul Merson tells Chelsea to sell these four players in January
Paul Merson says Chelsea should axe these first-team regulars in the January transfer window
Paul Merson has urged Jose Mourinho to oversee a winter clear-out at Chelsea as the Portuguese coach bids to turn the Blues’ stuttering form around.
The west London side head into Monday’s clash against surprise Premier League leaders Leicester City languishing in 14th place in the table and just two points above the relegation zone after a disastrous start to their title defence.
Many of Chelsea’s first-team players who helped the Blues lift the Premier League and League cup last season have struggled to find consistent form this term.
And as the January transfer window looms large, former Arsenal star Merson has urged Mourinho to sell the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Loic Remy, John Obi Mikel and Radamel Falcao.
Merson wrote in his column for the Daily Star: “Chelsea need a January clear-out – so they can break the bank for Harry Kane.
“And I would start by getting rid of Cesc Fabregas. He was brilliant when he first came back to England but hasn’t been good enough for months. They’ve been carrying him.
“Then there’s John Obi Mikel. Doesn’t he want to play football? They’ve been trying to get rid of him for months but he’s still there picking up a cheque.
“Radamel Falcao hasn’t worked either, that was a lazy signing in my opinion. He was the best centre forward in the world once but he’s a shadow of that player.
“And Loic Remy should go too, he’s just not good enough to play in a top-four team.”
Chelsea slumped to their eighth Premier League defeat of the season when they lost 1-0 to newly-promoted Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
