Paul Merson tells Chelsea to sign this Premier League star in January
Paul Merson believes that Chelsea should make a January transfer move for Tottenham striker Harry Kane
Paul Merson has urged Jose Mourinho to splash the cash on signing Harry Kane in the January transfer window as the Portuguese coach bids to turn around Chelsea’s stuttering start to the season.
The Blues have struggled to find consistent form since the beginning of the campaign and suffered their latest Premier League defeat when they lost 1-0 to newly-promoted Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
Mourinho did watch his side return to winning ways and secure a spot in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Porto on Wednesday night.
However, former Arsenal man Merson feels that the west London club are severely lacking options up front and says Mourinho should address the problem next month by considering a swoop for Spurs striker Kane.
Merson wrote in his column for the Daily Star: “There is too much dead wood at Chelsea and it needs a shake-up. They need to sign a striker to put pressure on Diego Costa, who’s been awful.
“I think he’s been mishandled as well though, I think Costa needs the kid gloves treatment, not the cold shoulder.
“But imagine what having some real competition from a top-drawer centre-forward would do for him. That’s why I think they have got to go for Harry Kane.
“I’d be shocked if Tottenham didn’t have to sell a player to pay for their stadium.
“People keep saying Chelsea are after Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid. But he’s exactly the same as Eden Hazard, Willian and Pedro.
“They need a proper centre forward, because they are not scoring enough goals.”
Chelsea travel to Leicester City in the Premier League on Monday night, with the Blues currently 14th in the top flight table.
