Paul Merson tells Louis van Gaal to drop this Man United man
Paul Merson believes that Marouane Fellaini is not cut out to play in the holding midfield role for Manchester United
Paul Merson has told Louis van Gaal that he never should have sold Darren Fletcher – and says Marouane Fellaini is not cut out to play in a holding midfield role for Manchester United.
Fletcher signed for West Bromwich Albion in February after being deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford by Van Gaal.
The 31-year-old has featured in all 16 of the Baggies’ Premier League games so far this season, while the 28-year-old Fellaini has played in eight of United’s top-flight games after being injured for part of the campaign.
Former Arsenal star Merson has questioned Van Gaal’s decision to sell Fletcher and believes that he would be a perfect candidate to play alongside Michael Carrick in central midfield for the Red Devils – ahead of Fellaini.
Merson told Sky Sports: “I’d have Darren Fletcher all day long. Sir Alex Ferguson used to play him in all the big matches, going up against Patrick Vieira when they had their battles with Arsenal, and he never had a bad game. It’s still the same for him at West Brom. I can’t imagine he was taking up a big chunk of the budget either.
“Then you’d have Michael Carrick alongside him. Certainly not Marouane Fellaini. If he’s a holding midfielder then I’m a centre-back!”
United are gearing up for their Premier League clash with Norwich City at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon as the bid to return to winning ways following their defeat at Bournemouth.
