Paul Merson: This new Man United signing is low on confidence
Paul Merson says Anthony Martial is struggling with confidence issues like the rest of the Manchester United squad
Anthony Martial has been struggling for confidence playing for Manchester United in recent weeks, according to Paul Merson.
The 20-year-old has been a regular fixture in Louis van Gaal’s first-team this season since arriving at Old Trafford from Monaco in a big-money transfer deal over the summer.
Martial initially hit the ground running in his first few appearances for United but has only scored one goal in his last 10 games for club and country.
The France international has started 10 of United’s 16 Premier League games so far this season and played the full 90 minutes as the Red Devils slumped to a disappointing 2-1 loss to Bournemouth last Saturday.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson says Martial is suffering from a lack of confidence currently present in the whole of the United squad.
Merson told Sky Sports: “Anthony Martial is a good player and I’d have him over Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez but he’s also low on confidence.
“Ultimately it comes down to the fact that the players are playing with shackles on them and a lack of confidence, which comes from the manager.
“I don’t blame the players for that, you can tell they’re a bag of nerves. Nobody is out there playing with confidence.”
Martial will be expecting to feature when United host Norwich City at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday.
