Paul Merson: Why Man United could appoint Jose Mourinho
Paul Merson believes Manchester United could appoint Jose Mourinho after Chelsea sack their legendary manager
Paul Merson has warned Louis van Gaal that Manchester United could turn to Jose Mourinho unless the Red Devils improve in the coming weeks.
Chelsea sacked Mourinho just seven months after the defending champions suffered their ninth Premier League defeat of the season at Leicester City on Monday night.
Man United might look and think one of the best managers in world football is available, let’s get him
The Foxes eased to a 2-1 victory over Mourinho’s side to move two points clear at the top of the Premier League table, whilst Chelsea were left trailing the pace-setters by a staggering 20 points.
United manager Louis van Gaal has been facing an uncertain week as Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola was linked with the Old Trafford role following a 2-1 loss to Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium last weekend.
However, former Arsenal playmaker Merson reckons the 20-time English champions could turn to three-time Premier League winner Mourinho unless United improve in the coming weeks.
“Louis van Gaal will be looking behind him,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“If it doesn’t go well for Manchester United over the next week or two, they might look and think one of the best managers in world football is available, let’s get him.
“If results don’t pick up, I wouldn’t be surprised.”
Chelsea are in 16th place in the Premier League table and a point above the relegation zone ahead of Saturday’s visit of Sunderland.
