Paul Parker: Why Man United duo look unhappy under Louis van Gaal
Paul Parker runs rule over Man United duo Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial
Paul Parker says Manchester United duo Anthony Martial and Memphis Depay look unhappy playing under Louis van Gaal.
The Netherlands international was the first of United’s summer signings after he moved to PSV Eindhoven in a £25m deal following his Eredivisie title success.
I look at Martial and worry for him. He looks like a boy who doesn’t smile anymore. He doesn’t look like he’s enjoying himself
Memphis scored in a 2-1 win at Watford last month after he was handed his first start in seven games in the Champions League and Premier League.
Former United defender Parker believes the 22-year-old winger has been made a scapegoat for the 20-time English champions’s up front.
“The form Depay is showing hasn’t just happened because he’s playing in the Premier League,” Parker told Yahoo Sport.
“That boy probably feels like a scapegoat. He’s in a country relatively close to where he’s from, but feeling a million miles away.”
Martial, on the other hand, joined the Red Devils in the final day of the summer transfer window in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 side Monaco, becoming Europe’s most-expensive teenager.
And Parker, who played under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, believes the France teenager is looking miserable at the Red Devils.
“I look at Martial and worry for him. He looks like a boy who doesn’t smile anymore. He doesn’t look like he’s enjoying himself,” Parker added.
