Paul Scholes has told Manchester United to stand by Louis van Gaal and give the Dutchman the chance to turn around their season.

The United boss has found himself under intense pressure in recent weeks after a miserable run of Premier League form followed their Champions League exit at the hands of Wolfsburg earlier this month.

Van Gaal has had to contend with relentless speculation about his future during the Christmas period, with some reports claiming that sacked Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho could take charge at Old Trafford should the Dutchman be sacked.

However, former United midfielder Scholes believes that the Red Devils should stick by Van Gaal and allow him to see the season out.

Speaking on BT Sport before Manchester United’s clash with Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday night, Scholes said: “Performances throughout the season have quite simply not been good enough, especially in these last four or five weeks.

“OK, they were winning games in the first part of the season – they got to the top of the league, but it still wasn’t entertaining football and it still wasn’t football you’d like to come and see.

“Now in the last three or four weeks they’ve probably had the results they deserve.

“But no, I don’t think he should go, I think he should be given the chance to turn it around. He’s got great experience and has been at massive clubs and done it before. You [should] give him the chance to turn their fortunes around.”

United, who have not won the title since 2013, finished fourth in Van Gaal’s first season in charge at Old Trafford.
