Petr Cech: Why I admire these Man United legends
Petr Cech speaks of his admiration for Manchester United legends Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar
Petr Cech has spoken of his respect for Manchester United legends Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar.
The Arsenal shot-stopper helped the Gunners move to within two points of surprise leaders Leicester City after the north London side’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City at Emirates Stadium on Monday night.
Cech needs one more shut-out to keep a record 170 Premier League clean sheets ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Southampton on Saturday night.
Whilst the 33-year-old goalkeeper has kept more clean sheets than Schmeichel and Van der Sar, Cech has explained why he idolised the United legends in the early stages of his career.
“I have to say, when I was a kid I looked up to every goalkeeper,” Cech told Arsenal’s Facebook page.
“I tried to pick up the pieces and make a puzzle of all the best skills of different goalkeepers.
“If you looked at Oliver Kahn and his character. He was so important, so aggressive and living the game.
“If you look at Peter Schmeichel and his overall presence and his saves.
“Then Edwin van der Sar was very important for Ajax.
“I try to take the best of everyone for myself and work on things I can improve.”
The Gunners eased to a 2-1 victory over title rivals Manchester City at The Emirates on Monday night thanks to goals from Arsenal strikers Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott.
Arsenal are two points adrift of surprise leaders Leicester City ahead of their next Premier League game at St Mary’s on Saturday night.
Wenger’s Arsenal side haven’t won the Premier League title since 2004.
