Phil Thompson: Why Jurgen Klopp should start this Liverpool striker
Phil Thompson says Jurgen Klopp should start Divock Origi for Liverpool's clash against Watford
Phil Thompson says Divock Origi deserves to start Liverpool’s clash against Watford at Vicarage Road on Sunday afternoon.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp introduced Belgium international Origi as a substitute following Dejan Lovren’s horror injury at Anfield in the second half, and the striker scored a deflected strike in the sixth minute of added time in their 2-2 draw with West Brom last weekend.
And former Liverpool captain Thompson believes the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager should start the Reds’s game against the Hornets following his first Premier League goal last weekend.
Thompson told Sky Sports: “I would think Origi has done enough to warrant a starting place, especially for an away game where his pace will be a real threat.
“Jurgen Klopp is obviously struggling to get the best out of Benteke and the needs to find a way of breaking teams down at home.
“This will be a difficult challenge for Liverpool but they seem to relish the tougher tasks.”
The Liverpool striker, who moved to Anfield from Lille in the summer, netted a hat-trick in a 6-1 victory over Southampton in the League Cup quarter-final at St Mary’s earlier this month.
Origi agreed a deal to join Liverpool from Ligue 1 side Lille following the 2014 World Cup.
However, the striker returned to the French side on the loan before he completed a move to Liverpool this summer.
