Steven Gerrard has hailed Liverpool’s “blazing” squad after their emphatic 6-1 win at Southampton in Wednesday night’s League Cup quarter-final.
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge put his injury woes behind him and scored twice in the space of four first-half minutes to overturn Sadio Mane’s opener for the Saints at St Mary’s.
Divock Origi gave the visitors a two-goal cushion before half-time and the Belgium international went on to complete his hat-trick in the second half, while Jordon Ibe came off the bench to score.
Liverpool are bidding to win the League Cup for a record ninth time and Jurgen Klopp’s side were rewarded for their impressive win with a semi-final clash against Stoke City over two legs in January.
Former Reds captain Gerrard, who has been training with Klopp’s squad over the past week, took to Instagram to dedicate a message to the Liverpool players.
Gerrard wrote on his Instagram page: “ blazing squad
