Jon Flanagan's injury nightmare appears to be coming to an end after Liverpool Under-21's match

Jon Flanagan handed Liverpool an injury boost ahead of their trip to Sunderland on Wednesday night.

The England international hasn’t made an appearance for Liverpool this season after undergoing surgery on a knee problem in the summer.

The 22-year-old full-back has been sidelined for over 12 months after the Reds youngster suffered a serious knee injury in 2014 following a breakthrough season at Anfield.

However, Flanagan made a return to first-team training earlier this month as the Liverpool youth graduate edged closer to a return to competitive action.

And Liverpool Echo journalist James Pearce kept Reds supporters updated on Flanagan’s progress as he lined out for the club’s Under-21 side against Fleetwood Town.

Flanagan, who was part of the Reds’s League Cup-winning squad in 2012, scored one goal in 25 Premier League appearances during the 2013/14 season.

The Liverpool youngster will have to dislodge right-back Nathaniel Clyne or left-back Alberto Moreno to get back in Jurgen Klopp’s side.
