Rio Ferdinand blasts ’embarrassing’ Man United
Rio Ferdinand slams Manchester United after Champions League exit at Wolfsburg
Rio Ferdinand has branded Manchester United an embarrassment following their Champions League exit on Tuesday night.
The Red Devils were condemned to the Europa League after the visitors squandered a first-half lead after Anthony Martial had make the breakthrough in the 10th minute at Wolfsburg.
If you strip it back, this squad needs a hard look
However, the hosts hit back and were level through Naldo and Vieirinha put the hosts in front before the Wolfsburg striker sealed victory in the 84th minute despite a Wolfsburg own goal giving United late hope.
And Ferdinand insisted that United should feel embarrassed about being demoted to the Europa League after winning two of their six group-stage games in Europe’s top-tier club competition.
“It’s embarrassing. I was in a squad that went into the Europa League and it’s an embarrassment,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“You don’t want to come out of your house, you don’t want to walk around Manchester.
“People look at you and think ‘you’re not good enough’, questioning you as an individual and as part of a team that didn’t get through the group stages that you should have.
“If you strip it back, this squad needs a hard look. There is no pace or power. People are looking around at each other rather than saying, ‘I will drag you through’.”
Ferdinand was part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Champions League-winning side in 2008 after a penalty shootout victory over Chelsea in Moscow.
The former England defender also played in final defeats by Barcelona in 2009 and 2011.
Ferdinand reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time with Leeds United in 2001.
