Rio Ferdinand: This Arsenal star is Premier League’s best defender

Rio Ferdinand runs rule over Arsenal centre-half Laurent Koscielny

Rio Ferdinand has hailed Arseanl centre-half Laurent Koscileny as the best defender in the Premier League.

The France international produced a disciplined performance in the Gunners’s 3-0 victory over Olympiacos in their must-win Champions League game in Greece on Wednesday night.

Koscielny was rushed back from injury ahead of the vital European clash after he picked up a problem during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Norwich City at Carrow Road last month.

And Ferdinand, who is the most-expensive defender in Premier League history, explained why he believes the 30-year-old is the pick of the current defenders in the English top-flight.

“Laurent Koscielny, when he’s on form, he’s the best defender in the league for me,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“He’s one of those you don’t want to play against – he’s quick, he’s aggressive.”

The 30-year-old made his return from injury in a 3-1 win against Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday before Wednesday night’s triumph in Greece.

Koscielny has scored twice in 13 Premier League games for Arsene Wenger’s side this season.
