Sky Sports pundit states his prediction for Chelsea v Porto
Charlie Nicholas is backing Chelsea to scrape through to the last 16 of the Champions League by beating Porto
Charlie Nicholas is tipping Chelsea to get the right result against Porto and book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Blues head into their crunch European clash looking to return to winning ways after their stuttering start to the season continued as they lost 1-0 to Bournemouth in front of their home fans at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
Chelsea need a win to guarantee their place in the knockout phase of Europe’s elite club competition as they look to rediscover some form as the hectic festive schedule looms large.
And former Arsenal star Nicholas is tipping Jose Mourinho’s men to seal a 1-0 win over the Portuguese outfit at Stamford Bridge and secure the result needed to progress.
Nicholas told Sky Sports: “This is the most confusing thing I’ve witnessed with a club of this stature. We’re playing a guessing game week by week trying to work out what we’re going to get from Chelsea.
“I said last week, I don’t know why Jose Mourinho wants to keep playing Cesc Fabregas in a deeper role. His influence has to be creative, not work ethic. He’s not got the pace about him but he has speed of mind to open things up, just as he did last season with his assists for Diego Costa and Eden Hazard. Willian seems the only man to keep them going.
“I think Mourinho had to leave Costa out after the incident last week but I think he’ll bring him back on Wednesday night as his job is genuinely on the line. I never thought I’d say that about Mourinho. I don’t think they’ll make the top four now so what have they got to play for if they go out?
“They still need to draw and I think they’ll fall over the line with a potentially uncomfortable but ultimately successful night.”
Chelsea, who have lost eight top-flight games this term, then turn their attentions to their next Premier League game – a trip to leaders Leicester City on Monday night.
