Steven Gerrard reacts when asked if Arsenal can win the Champions League
The Liverpool captain had this to say after Arsenal's impressive 3-0 Champions League win at Olympiacos
Steven Gerrard has warned Arsenal not to get carried away by their 3-0 win at Olympiacos after the Gunners produced a superb away performance to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Knowing that they needed to win by any scoreline apart from 1-0 or 2-1 to reach the knockout phase, Arsenal took the lead in the 29th minute when Olivier Giroud headed home Aaron Ramsey’s cross in the box.
They would have to add maybe one or two big players in January
The France international then made it 2-0 four minutes after half-time when he coolly slotted home from close range after neat build-up play from Joel Campbell.
Giroud then completed his hat-trick with a confidently-taken penalty after Omar Elabdellaoui handled in the box.
Gerrard, who helped Liverpool beat Olympiacos at Anfield on the Reds’ way to winning the Champions League in the 2004-05 season, was thoroughly impressed by Arsenal’s all-round display in Athens.
But the former Liverpool captain warned that they have plenty left to do if they are to lift the trophy next summer.
Asked if Arsenal could go on to win the Champions League this season, Gerrard said on BT Sport: “We’ll have to wait and see.
“There’s a lot of hard work to do if they’re going to achieve that. They would have to add maybe one or two big players in January for that to happen. But they were fantastic tonight all over the pitch.
“We knew they had the firepower going forward but could they be solid defensively and keep that all-important clean sheet? They were superb tonight.”
Arsenal take on Aston Villa on Sunday in the Premier League.
