Steven Gerrard has a birthday message for his former Liverpool team-mate

Steven Gerrard may be no longer a member of the Liverpool squad, but the former Reds captain is staying in touch with his old team-mates.

The 35-year-old Champions League winner has been training with Jurgen Klopp’s squad in recent weeks following the end of his first season in Major League Soccer.

The LA Galaxy midfielder opted to call time on his 17-year Anfield career in the summer and linked up with former Liverpool striker Robbie Keane in Los Angeles.

However, Gerrard made sure not to forget his former team-mate Martin Skrtel’s 31st birthday on Tuesday afternoon, posted the above photo on his Instagram page.

Gerrard wrote on the photo-sharing app: “Happy birthday big man 👍 @martin37skrtel”

The former Liverpool captain won the League Cup in 2012 alongside the Slovakia international at Wembley in 2012 after a penalty shootout victory.

Gerrard and Skrtel were team-mates for seven years after the no-nonsense defender moved to Liverpool from Russian side Zenit St Petersburg in 2008.
