David De Gea De Gea wasn’t helped by Memphis as the midfielder’s poor header led to Bojan’s opener. The United No1 could do little about Marko Arnautovic’s sensational second. The Spanish goalkeeper kept the score-line respectable in the second half. 7/10

Daley Blind The Dutch international looked to get forward to provide much-needed width on the right wing but he was limited with his inability to beat an opponent or provide a dangerous cross. 5

Chris Smalling Not the greatest afternoon for United’s best player this season. Exposed as Arnautovic broke free but the Stoke forward couldn’t add a third. 5

Phil Jones The United defender was exposed like Smalling on more than one occasion by Stoke’s collection of playmakers. Once considered a no-nonsense defender, Jones was hesitant. 5

Ashley Young Young made a mistake with his awful Christmas Day shirt and he continued to spew errors as his reckless handball conceded the free-kick which led to Arnautovic’s amazing goal. 5

Michael Carrick He lost the physical battle in midfield. Carrick distributed the ball well but couldn’t find too many gaps in Stoke’s defence. 6

Ander Herrera Handed a rare start in Van Gaal’s starting line-up. He couldn’t beat Butland with a close-range attempt on stroke of half-time. The Spanish playmaker was subdued. 5

Juan Mata Disappointing performance from the most-expensive player on the pitch. He couldn’t create too many chances for Martial or Rooney. 5

Marouane Fellaini He couldn’t poke the loose ball past Butland unlike his close-range finish at Bournemouth. The Belgium international couldn’t beat the Stoke shot stopper from close range midway through the second half. 6

Memphis Depay He misjudged a header back to De Gea in the windy conditions at the Britannia Stadium. A poor defensive decision. His long-range free-kick required a save from Butland. Hauled off at half-time. 4

Anthony Martial The France striker was pretty quiet seven days after ending his Premier League goal drought. A bruising first game at Stoke. The £36m signing didn’t really appear up for the battle against the home defence. Denied late on by a fine Butland stop. 5

Wayne Rooney He looked frustrated after coming off the bench. Spent most of his time talking to the referee. He couldn’t sort his feet out after the captain was played through on goal by Mata. 5
