Three left-backs Man United could target after Marcos Rojo injury blow
Kieran Beckles examines three left-backs Louis van Gaal could target after Marcos Rojo's reported injury setback
Bruno Martins Indi
Louis van Gaal has shown a willingness to sign members of his 2014 World Cup Netherlands squad since his appointment at Old Trafford. The Dutchman immediately made a move for Ajax defender Daley Blind, and the 2014 Dutch player of the year has proven a versatile addition to the Manchester United squad over the past season-and-a-half. Memphis Depay has disappointed since his £25m switch in May after arriving at the Red Devils with a glowing reputation after inspiring PSV Eindhoven to title glory. Could Bruno Martins Indi be the latest Dutch international to be reunited with Van Gaal? Marcos Rojo’s reported dislocated shoulder is expected to keep the Argentine sidelined for a couple of months, with Luke Shaw already recovering from a broken leg and most likely out for the season. Ashley Young isn’t a viable option in the long-term, particularly if United do progress to Champions League last 16. Martins Indi has Champions League experience with Porto, he is familiar with Van Gaal’s methods, and he has a physique that would be suited to the Premier League. The United manager clearly rates Martins Indi, too, after playing the defender in six of the Netherlands’s seven World Cup games. At 23, he would be a signing for the present and the future.
Haven’t heard Ashley Cole’s name mentioned in a while? Well, the England legend has been out of favour at Roma, including being omitted from the Serie A side’s Champions League squad. At the moment, the 34-year-old is only good for the occasional appearance in a team-mate’s Instagram selfie. Obviously there would be question-marks over his fitness and match sharpness as he hasn’t played a competitive match since March, but Cole would be a frugal signing. The former Arsenal and Chelsea defender has won three Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League, four FA Cups and the League Cup during his career in England. Cole would be the ideal mentor for Shaw, who has been touted as the veteran’s heir in the England side. Could his former loyalties prevent a move to Old Trafford? Unlikely, after all, he did swap Arsenal for Chelsea.
Fabio Coentrao is a name regularly linked with a move to Manchester United over the past 24 months. As of yet, the Portuguese defender hasn’t found his way to Old Trafford. He finally sealed a temporary move away from Real Madrid in the summer, becoming an important cog in Monaco’s side. The 27-year-old has scored two goals and has made one assist in seven Ligue 1 games. He has also racked up three Europa League appearances. Coentrao is an attacking-minded full-back and would add some much-needed flair to the United side, too. The Portugal international is currently on loan at Monaco, so United could find it difficult to nail down a deal for Coentrao.
