Three reasons why Man United should sack Van Gaal and appoint Mourinho

Tom Phillips gives three reasons why Manchester United should replace Louis van Gaal with Jose Mourinho

1) Fans are losing patience with Van Gaal’s ‘philosophy’

Louis van Gaal’s notorious, once successful football philosophy has struggled to gain any momentum at Old Trafford since his appointment. The Dutch manager speaks passionately about his philosophy but the fans have not been so quick to embrace it. As Manchester United fans watch the likes of Wayne Rooney, Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial struggle to score goals. United have dropped into the Europa League and have found themselves in a position of possibly playing more games as a result. Yet Van Gaal insists his philosophy is working, the fans want change and if they cannot get it from the manager, they will soon turn their backs on him.

2) Mourinho is a proven winner

Of course, his critics will point to Chelsea’s recent slump in form and league position but there is no doubt that Jose Mourinho is capable of great things wherever he goes. During his two stints at Chelsea, he won the Premier League three times, the FA Cup, the League Cup three times and the Community shield. Over his managerial career of just 15 years, he has gone on to win 21 trophies, including two Champions League trophies. He would be the perfect fit to bring a winning mentality back to United something which has been lacking at the club since Sir Alex Ferguson left.

3) He focus team around Rooney

As it stands, Rooney’s form has been below par. Some blame him. Others blame Van Gaal. Others just question the team, but one thing is for sure, Mourinho will get Rooney ticking again. The striker has been in poor form, scoring just two goals in the league so far. Most of that is down to the disciplined style of play that Van Gaal has brought – far from the attacking and entertaining football that Sir Alex Ferguson promoted. Mourinho was close to signing Rooney to be part of his plans at Chelsea, so the Portuguese coach knows what might make Rooney a goal-machine once again. United’s lack of success is down to the fact that Rooney is not performing and if you do not have a captain that sets the bar high at a club like United then you will struggle to win trophies. Mourinho can solve that.
