Three strikers Chelsea could sign in January
Tom Phillips examines three players who could move to Chelsea in the January transfer window
1) Edinson Cavani
While the focus is on Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Paris Saint-Germain, Edinson Cavani is still one of the big stars at the Qatari-owned club. The Uruguayan has been prolific whoever he has played for: the last time he failed to reach 20 goals in a season was when he was at Palermo in 2010. Cavani had one of the best seasons of his career scoring 31 goals in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side in 2014/15. This season, he has already scored 13 times before Christmas and is showing no signs of a decline in form. Cavani is the perfect candidate for an out-of-form team and would deliver a timely wake-up call for Diego Costa.
2) Antoine Griezmann
Antoine Griezmann has been a sensational player for Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side and last season saw him become La Liga’s third top goal-scorer behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. He scored 22 goals last term, and this season, he looks set to beat that tally as he has already netted 12 times in all competitions. He has over 300 appearances under his belt at just 24, so he would provide a mature and experienced mind set in Chelsea’s dressing room. His style of play permits him to play competently on the wing, too, which adds some versatility to his game. Atletico chief Enrique Cerezo has insisted that Griezmann will not join Chelsea in January, but it will be hard to ignore the lure of the Premier League.
3) Mauro Icardi
The main man for Inter Milan, Mauro Icardi is a young and promising striker that could solve Chelsea’s current problem for the long-term. The Argentine was joint top goal-scorer in Serie A last season with Luca Toni and he has been listed as one of the best young players in European football. His style of play would be a perfect fit for the Premier League. A former Barcelona youth trainee, Icardi has the pace to beat defenders, while his physical strength helps him keep control of the ball under pressure. He is also tactically intelligent, which has benefitted him greatly under Roberto Mancini and no doubt will for Chelsea in the Premier League.
